BloxNote Death Note Guide: Notebook Name-Entry Kill Mechanic
How the BloxNote notebook works: identity requirements, the write-confirm-resolve elimination flow, reported timings, cooldown, tells, and role-access limits in the current build.
In BloxNote, the notebook (Death Note) is a two-step elimination tool: the holder must first learn a target's identity information — by stealing an ID at close range or otherwise learning their real name — and only then enter that name to trigger the kill. Without identity data, the notebook alone cannot fire.
The two-step kill: identity first, write second
The notebook is not a simple kill button. Community guides describe the kill as a two-step loop: acquire the target's identity information first, then commit the name in the notebook. ID inspection is described as a separate ability with its own reported 20-second cooldown. Shinigami Eyes, a paid reveal reported to cost roughly 15% of the task meter, offers an alternative way to obtain names without the close-range steal.
Name-entry rules: exact display-name matching and the per-name window
The kill only resolves if the typed string exactly matches the target's registered display name; a misspelling wastes the attempt's timer but does not consume the notebook. The same reporting describes a 30-second window per name attempt, after which the input clears and the holder must reopen the writing interface. Whether the game distinguishes display names from usernames, and how special characters are handled, points to the ID system rather than being confirmed here. These input rules are third-party community reporting and should be rechecked after updates.
Observed elimination sequence: write, resolve, kill feed, cooldown
- Open the writing interface and enter the target's name.
- Confirm the entry; a short cast/channel follows. Community sources describe the kill as resolving roughly one second after the name commits, giving the victim little reaction time.
- The victim dies: sources describe a brief screen flash, a death animation, a body dropping at the victim's position, and a kill feed entry. Reported durations for the full visible sequence differ across reporting — roughly one second, 3-4 seconds, or a 4-6 second scripted heart-attack animation — so check the current build in-game.
- The kill feed entry names only the victim, not the holder, so the counterplay side must infer the writer from location and timing.
- After a successful kill, the notebook enters a short cooldown during which the holder cannot write a new name; the notebook is not consumed and stays in the holder's hotbar.
- A write can be cancelled: the write cancels automatically if the holder's view is blocked by another player's model at the moment the name commits, without consuming the kill charge.
Write-state visual tells and the pass animation
| Tell or stage | When | Reliability per source | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Notebook glow | Item equipped; intensifies when the write window opens | High | Glow is tied to the held item, so it marks the holder regardless of which Kira-side role carries it |
| Rigid avatar posture | During the write channel | High | Holder cannot move until the write completes or is cancelled |
| Kill feed entry | Write resolves | High | Names the victim, not the holder |
| Pass/pickup animation | Notebook changes hands | Medium-ambiguous | Receiving player plays a brief pickup gesture; community reviews report the pass animation is hard to distinguish from simply putting the notebook away, so viewers cannot reliably tell who holds it |
Notebook transfer between Kira-side players
Community sources agree the notebook can change hands within the killing pair: Kira can pass the notebook to the Kira Follower, so either member of the killing team may hold it at a given time. One recorded tutorial describes the transfer as a click action, with the receiving ticket removing ownership from the original holder. Community reviews criticize that the pass animation is not clearly distinguishable from stowing the item, making the current holder ambiguous to observers.
Additional reported targeting option: criminal NPCs
At least two community reports describe criminal NPCs as writable targets, an alternative to player kills. Unlike the original Death Note: Killer Within — where NPC names were publicly broadcast and kills could occur from a distance at a capped rate — in BloxNote the only reported way to kill NPCs is to follow them and write their names on the spot, which is risky in public view. The reward framing (meter progress toward Shinigami Eyes rather than player-kill value) is also community-reported.
Role access and open questions
Several notebook mechanics are currently inconsistent across community guides and worth checking in-game:
- How the notebook is obtained: one wiki description has it spawning as a physical item at fixed map tables at round start, contested by Kira-side roles and visible via a glow; the BloxNote wiki's own Death Note FAQ states it is part of the Kira role from round start with no public spawn or pickup, and that ordinary players can never steal it.
- Kira Follower write access: a rules page states the Follower cannot write names and is only a courier, while other pages and FAQs describe either member of the killing pair as able to hold and write, and reference "2 Notebook Holders."
- Kill timing: reported values range from roughly one second after the name commits, to a 3-4 second death animation after a screen flash, to a 4-6 second scripted heart-attack animation when the victim crosses the holder's line of sight.
- Write channel duration: one description gives a 2-3 second interruptible channel dependent on server tick rate; another reports the write itself takes "literally one second."
All timing values here are community-reported approximations rather than confirmed constants, and all retained notebook claims come from community guides, FAQs, or creator commentary rather than developer documentation — recheck permissions, timings, and targeting after updates.
